Cookie Jar & Mill Creek DVD Deal

Mill Creek Entertainment has secured a multi-year deal with Cookie Jar Entertainment to release a slate of its popular animated programs on DVD. Mill Creek has previously released some great cartoons on DVD such as He-Man (2002), Teddy Ruxpin, Dungeons & Dragons and Prince Valiant. The deal between Cookie Jar and Mill Creek could mean some great cartoons from the 80's and 90's may finally see the light of day on DVD. As long as they don't just stick to the new shows in the catalogue, here's a look at a few of the possibilities:

Double Dragon

Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n' Wrestling

Mummies Alive!

Rainbow Bright

Street Sharks

Ulysses in the 31st Century

A lot of the titles available in Cookie Jar's back catalogue have had some DVD releases, but the few above could either stand to get a complete series release. If they can only pick 3 shows to put out on DVD, please let it be Starcom, M.A.S.K. and Street Sharks!!! Now, it is very possible that Cookie Jar doesn't even own the rights to some of these DIC shows. Rumour has it DIC bought back a lot of these titles a few years ago. Could be the reason we haven't seen M.A.S.K. on DVD yet.

Keep checking back here for more news on any upcoming Mill Creek DVD releases.

New Thundercats Statues???

I've been featuring the Hard Hero Thundercats statues on Cartoon and Horror for the past few months. More recently I discovered on one of the horror forums I post on frequently that Jerry Macaluso (previous owner of Now Playing Toys) and his new company Pop Culture Shock Collectibles will be releasing VERY high end Thundercats statues. They will be a combination of mixed media, highly detailed sculptures with cloth costumes and will be 1/4 scale in size!

Lucky for all of you, Jerry posted a very tiny image of the Lion-O statue on the forum. It's small, but you can tell it's going to look amazing! If only I had $400 to spare.

He will be 38" tall with a metal sword.  Lion-O is scheduled to ship September 2010 for any of you rich people out there.

Pop Culture Shock Collectibles Inc (PCSC) was formed in 2007 to produce high quality collectibles. PCSC is owned and operated by sculptor and designer Jerry Macaluso, former founder of SOTA toys. PCSC’s current roster includes Thundercats™, Street Fighter™ and Dark Stalkers™.

Altered States Non-Existent Action Figures

For my second wish list of action figures I would create, if I ran a toy company like NECA or Mezco, I am going to focus on a series of Altered States action figures. Now this is a far more obscure title than even Basket Case, so I don't know how many people would actually buy these figures...but I know I would!

Let's take a look at the possibilities...

Dr. Jessup - You absolutely need a Dr. Jessup action figure. You'd probably want a normal version of him when he's in the tank and an alternate head for when he first begins to regress physically.

Dr. Jessup Monkey Man - Definitely need a Neanderthal Jessup too.

Full Transformation Jessup - Probably the coolest figure, and really the only one most people would buy.

Mrs. Jessup Full Transformation - She's too boring to get a regular figure. But her inside-out transformation would look wicked on my shelf.

Possible accessories:

Action Figure Playsets - no action figure line is complete without a few playsets.
Sensory Depravation Tank 1

Sensory Depravation Tank 2

I swear, if I were very wealthy, I would create this line just for fun. I'm sure every kid at Christmas would want a sensory depravation tank to play with.

Grant Gould has been a freelance illustrator since 2004. His clients range from private collectors and small publishers to companies such as Lucasfilm and Topps Cards.

He has a wide range of Star Wars, Heroes and Battlestar Galactica illustrations. But I particularly love his 80's horror and cartoon images. Take a look at the few I pulled from his deviantART page...

Big Trouble in Little China Faux Comic Book Cover

Gurney from Dune - not really horror, but whatever

Rocketeer - This isn't horror either, but close enough to cartoon :)

Beastman (MOTU) and the Crow

A whole slew of 80's characters...and LOTR characters.

Skeletor (MOTU) and Storm Shadow (GI JOE)

Snake Eyes (GI JOE)

Inhumanoids(!) - Amazing

Bernard Rose's PAPERHOUSE is a very new movie to me. I only watched it recently because my good friend Jay "The Horror Section" Clarke wouldn't stop talking about it. After watching it, I am amazed that I had never seen it before, but also that the film still hasn't received a DVD release yet here in North America.

Paperhouse is a kids horror movie about a young girl by the name of Anna who draws a fictitious creepy house which she visits in very vivid dreams while she is sick. She quickly discovers that anytime she adds anything to the drawing, it appears in her dream. In these dreams she meets a sick boy named Marc, who she has also drawn, and the two start to bond and develop a friendship. Trouble arrises when Anna draws her absentee-father with a frown on his face. In the dream her father is a deformed creature and the two have to help each other to stay alive.

Paperhouse is essential a fantasy-horror coming-of-age movie for kids, and I think that may be why the film hasn't received its DVD release yet. The film, while extremely well done, raises many red-flags in the marketing department. The film doesn't quite know what it is. At times it feels more like a coming-of-age children's drama than a horror film. If I were a distributor I wouldn't know who to market this film for. In the end I think it is best suited for adults as they would get much more out of it than any kid. It has very complex themes and symbolism that would fly right over a child's head. I think most kids would actually find this movie quite boring, except for the dream sequences - which are just oozing in coolness and style.

Charlotte Burke who plays Anna is amazing in the role. It's amazing she never acted in another movie again after this one. It's also crazy that Bernard Rose has made two horror masterpieces, but still hasn't broken into the mainstream.

If you're a fan of Pan's Labyrinth or Let the Right One In, this movie is for you. It fits nicely into those group of horror-coming-of-age films. Unfortunately, you can't watch it unless you own a VCR and can find a VHS copy of it. If the distributor just markets it as a film by the director of Candyman, I definitely think this will attract some buyers.

Here's some cover options, if the opportunity for a release were ever to arise:

US VHS Cover artwork
Definitely doesn't represent the film very well and makes it look very menacing, but pretty cool. I remember this cover art very well, but never even thought twice about renting it. Probably a good reason not to use this artwork.

Theatrical Poster
Probably the best and most recognizable.

UK DVD Release
I think I like it better with Anna on the right.

Book Cover
This is the cover for the book the movie is based on. This would be good artwork if Criterion released the movie.

Bootlegs of Paperhouse are readily available on the web for those of you curious about the movie. Let's hope you won't have to and somebody will release it soon enough.

Coming Soon - Various Cartoon DVDs

I've been meaning to post this for a while now. A bunch of new 80's cartoons are coming to DVD and were recently announced. Here's some of them...

The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo (1985)
The Complete Series DVD
Release Date: June 29th
Warner Home Entertainment is releasing the DVD June 29th and it includes all 13 episodes on 2 discs (286 min). Vincent Price is featured in this series as "Vincent Van Ghoul" - which is a caricature of himself.  I never saw the series, but it looks pretty cool. The only bonus feature seams to be a bonus episode of Shaggy & Scooby Get a Clue.

G.I. Joe The Movie Special Edition (1987)
Blu-ray & DVD
Release Date: July 27th
I'm very excited about this release. It will be interesting to see how this looks on Blu-ray. Shout! Factory is releasing the Special Edition on Blu-ray and DVD on July 27th. Special Features still haven't been announced, but knowing Shout! I'm sure they will be great. I'm glad they stuck to the original cover artwork.

Defenders of the Earth (1986)
The Complete Series
Release Date: May 18th
Mill Creek Entertainment is releasing the complete series DVD set on May 18th. All 65 episodes will be spread across 5 double-sided discs. I have to admit, I never saw this show as a kid, but it has a cast of characters that are very familiar looking - ie. The Phantom & Flash Gordon. I love the cover artwork for this one! Here's a short synopsis:

Tyrant Ming the Merciless and his vast army of evil accomplices are working overtime to eliminate the human race. But the Defenders of Earth led by legendary crime-fighters The Phantom, Flash Gordon, Mandrake and his trusted confidant and bodyguard Lothar join forces with their uniquely talented teenage children to challenge Ming and his evil followers in a series of great adventures. Both sides employ powerful computers and space age technology in their arsenals of weapons. They are our last best hope. For a frightened but determined planet they are the Defenders of the Earth.
