LOST TOYS - Now Playing Series 4

This weeks featured LOST TOYS are particularly painful for me to write about. All of these figures were some of my most-wanted action figures ever sculpted and previewed. When Now Playing Action Figures hit the market, it was like god came down and said "Let there be f*@%ing awesome action figures".

Now Playing was a series of Horror movie figures produced by SOTA Toys - a company created by Jerry Macaluso, a horror FX artist who had worked on cult movies such as The Toxic Avenger: Part 2, Darkman, Spawn and Weird Science. Now Playing was the perfect line of action figures. It was riddled with some of the most obscure characters from Horror cinema. Here's a run-down of the first 3 series:

Series 1
DARKMAN, Nightmare Demon (AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON) and Toxie (THE TOXIC AVENGER)

Series 2
The Creeper (JEEPERS CREEPERS), Killer Klown (KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE) and The Mummy (THE MUMMY RETURNS)

Series 3
Werewolf (DOG SOLDIERS), Meg Mucklebones (LEGEND) and The Baron (DUNE)
Series 3 even had a THING boxset

Everyone could agree that SOTA Toys was GOD of Horror movie action figures for a short while. Unfortunately, just before series 3 was released, Jerry sold the company to someone else and the quality was noticeably worse than the pervious 2 releases. However, at least we got a Dog Soldiers figure and not to mention, a really cool Thing box set that no one ever expected.

In addition to these 3 series and multiple other larger scale figures and models, SOTA also released a line of LAND OF THE DEAD figures under their Now Playing line.

Here is where the LOST TOYS come in....

It begins with Toy Fair 2006. SOTA releases images for their planned box-set for series 4 - an absolutely astounding piece of art... Burt Gummer and a Tremor!

TREMORS Box Set
This box set was supposed to be released Christmas 2006. However, Christmas came and went and no Burt or Tremor.

A few months later at the 2006 San Diego Comic-Con, SOTA Toys previewed a few more figures and statues that would be a part of their 4th line of action figures. They included THE LEPRECHAUN and Herbert West from RE-ANIMATOR.

Herbert West - RE-ANIMATOR

This is probably the one figure I have wanted more than any other to this day in 7" scale. It is a real shame it never saw the light of day.

THE LEPRECHAUN

2006 passed by in a flash and none of these figures were in toy stores. I have no idea what happened next, but at the 2007 Toy Fair in New York, SOTA Toys announced the official line-up of Now Playing series 4. Re-Animator and the Tremors Box Set were cut from the series, but now 2 new toys were making their debut. The line now consisted of The Leprechaun, Shadow Puppet Killer Klown and an Anubis Warrior from THE MUMMY.

Shadow Pupper Klown - KILLER KLOWS FROM OUTER SPACE
Anubis Warrior - THE MUMMY RETURNS

To round out series 4, they included a box set of David and the Werewolf from AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON - another 2 figures shamefully missing from toy shelves. I presume this box set was supposed to replace the Tremors one.

Without searching through hundreds of pages of message board postings, it's hard to find information on where everything fell apart for Now Playing. SOTA is still around today creating HP Lovecraft and Street Fighter figures. I don't follow their releases very closely, so I'm not too sure what else they have planned.

I really wish I had more information on all of the unreleased figures SOTA had planned. Luckily a retailer called AMOK Time (who used to sell all of the Now Playing figures) has started manufacturing their own figures. They have even picked up a few of the licenses SOTA dropped the ball on...ie. Killer Klowns and Re-Animator. AMOK Time isn't releasing the figures very fast, but I would definitely say they are our last surviving hope to ever seeing the above figures manufactured in the near future.

  2. Thanks!
Nope, never played the Tick video game for N64. I think I may start to look into writing about some of the video game's adapted from Cartoons and Horror movies at some point this year. So much to write about and so little time.

  5. Tremors would have been awesome. My boys are 9 and 10 and they've seen them all. This would have an unexpected gift that would've rocked their world's. I'll just have to check out eBay.
