Cartoon & Horror News - May 14

I have to apologize to everyone for a lack of a Thursday Cartoon Intro or a Fan Art Friday post this week. For some reason Blogger was down for most of Thursday and Friday, during the times I was able to do both posts. It seems to be back to normal now, so I will be sure to post them this week.

Onto the news...

In the horror world, Horror Hound Magazine has a couple of new issues available for purchase. Issue 29 is now hitting bookstores and a special March issue for the Horror Hound Weekend was released. Both issues are available from their website.

HorrorHound #29

HorrorHound March 2011 Special

In DVD news, a few classic horror films are making their way to store shelves thanks to Scorpion Releasing. Not sure on release dates, but I would expect most to be released this year. Here's the full press release:

Scorpion Releasing proudly presents Katarina's Nightmare Theater, a new line of horror DVDs hosted by actress, and former WWE and now TNA star, Katarina Leigh Waters, as she introduces a series of cult films, many of them for the first time on DVD! See the bewitching Katarina introduce such horror classics as THE HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW, FINAL EXAM, THE INCUBUS, some of them in new high definition film transfers with new extras!

Also, for the first time on DVD such films as the 80's horror favorite HUMONGOUS, THE CARPENTER starring Wings Hauser (VICE SQUAD), THE HUMAN EXPERIMENTS starring Linda Haynes, AMERICAN NIGHTMARE with Michael Ironside, THE DEVIL WITHIN HER starring Joan Collins, the twin-terrors of THE MARK OF CAIN, and NOTHING BUT THE NIGHT starring genre greats Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing! Each DVD will have a play with or without Katarina's intros and closing segments and some will have audio commentaries with the filmmakers moderated by Katarina. All the DVD sleeves will feature a reversible cover. The first wave will be released in September, just in time for Halloween and new DVDs coming each month through March!

In the cartoon world, a number of studios have announced even more cartoon on DVD releases.

As previously mentioned, Warner Archives will be releasing Challenge of the Gobots and Mister T on DVD through their MOD service. Gobots will be available on May 17th and contains the original 5-part mini-series. The DVD will retail for $14.95 on Warner's website. Mister T is now available for purchase and includes the complete first season spread over 2 discs for $24.95.

CHALLENGE OF THE GOBOTS: THE ORIGINAL MINI-SERIES (1984) From Gobotron to your home, it's the original 5 episode mini-series that brought the GoBots to life. When Cy-kill embarks on his mad quest to conquer the galaxy starting with Earth, only Leader-1 and his band of Guardians stands in his way. The mini-series that launched a legend! Newly remastered from original film elements, Challenge of the GoBots has NEVER looked this good. See example below.

Remember back to a time when the coolest guy around had a Mohawk, gold chains, charisma to spare - and his own Saturday morning cartoon series. You're no fool. You know we're talking about the one and only Mr. T. In the 13 awesome and A-OK episodes in this terrific 2-disc collection, Mr. T coaches a team of teen gymnasts. Their star-spangled bus transports them to gymnastic competitions in exotic locations and along the way the ace athletes solve mysteries and right injustices. From New York City to Las Vegas to the Aztec pyramids, crime doesn't stand a chance against the original tough guy and his team of acrobatic wunderkinds! Now quit your jibba jabba and play the DVD!

Ghostbusters (The fake Ghostbusters, not the REAL Ghostbusters series) is coming back to DVD. The entire series was originally released by BCI Eclipse a few years ago, but now Classic Media is releasing a handful of episodes on a single disc for the ultra-low price of $6.95.

Also making a return to DVD, thanks to Classic Media, is the first 7 episodes of the original Voltron series. Look for the DVD on August 16th.

The Legend Begins tells the origin story of a brave team of space explorers - Keith, Lance, Sven, Hunk and Pidge - who search for the keys to five mythical robot lions on the planet Arus. Arus has been destroyed by the armies of King Zarkon and his use of giant Robeast monsters, created by the witch Haggar. The planet's only hope lies in the discovery of these five robot lions, which combine together to form the mighty robot, Voltron: Defender of the Universe! With the compelling stories, memorable characters, humor and heart-pounding action that made the 1980's series so popular, Voltron is the ultimate story of good versus evil, and the triumph of the human spirit.

The DVD will also include a number of new special features:
- Voltron 101 - An introduction to many of the elements that made the classic Voltron series such a hit in the 80's.
- Voltron Art Slide Show: An exclusive slideshow that features fan art and interpretations of the classic Voltron characters.
- Voltron Force Sizzle Reel: A peek at the new Voltron Force series which takes place 5 years after the classic series concluded.

Shout! Factory have finally released cover images for their upcoming M.A.S.K. DVD releases. The complete series will be available from Shout's store on August 9th and the first volume will be available in retail stores the same day. I have to admit, that is some sweet-ass DVD artwork.

And lastly, a late-90s comedy cartoon series will be getting its first ever retail DVD release thanks to Shout! Originally released in 2008 through Amazon, Hey Arnold! season one will be available August 9th.

In cartoon toy news, Mattel has announced their SDCC exclusives for this year.  You can look forward to an amazing Marlena action figure with Cringer, She-Ra Polly Pockets, a Voltron action figure and a 20" Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man.

Well, that's all the news for this week. One thing I will leave you with is a look at the two things I bought at Shock Stock 2011, since I forgot to include them in my last post.

One of the best issues of Cinefantastique... if you're a fan of Full Moon Video.
